INTERRACIAL COUPLES
In 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested simply because
she was a black woman and he was a white man. In that era of our history, laws
were in place that made it illegal for interracial couples to be wed. Today we
are much more tolerant. Are we, really? People of same sex relationships might disagree
on that one. Clearly, we have a lot more work to do with the tolerance of
others in our country.
In 1967, The Supreme Court found those laws prohibiting
interracial couples from marrying to be unconstitutional. 1967 wasn't so very
long ago if you think about it. The percentage of newlywed couples that were
different races was 3% in 1967 to 17% in 2015. Every year this statistic is on
the increase.
Today, couples that are in interracial relationships base
their relationships on who the person is and not what race they happen to be.
They don't feel the need to explain or prove themselves to the world at large.
Marriage to these couples, like all couples is about acceptance and respecting
your partner.
